Welcome to Thames Ditton
The picturesque village of Thames Ditton can be found on the banks of the River Thames, within the Elmbridge borough of Surrey, around 12 miles from the West End of London and a short distance to Kingston upon Thames. Although the History of Thames Ditton can be found dating back to 983, it was not until the nearby Hampton Court Palace was built and taken over by Henry VIII, that the area really began to develop, as Palace officials and workers took up residence in the village. During the 19th century, the village continued to grow with the arrival of the London and South Western Railway in 1849 and the building of the first school. In 1874 the wharf area, located near the Swan Inn on the river became a site for local industry, where a skilled bronze foundry was formed, producing fine bronze statues, including the statue of "Eros" found in Piccadilly Circus.
The village of Thames Ditton is centred around its thriving winding High Street and its triangular village green, known as Giggs Hill Green, which has hosted the local cricket club since 1833. Boyle Farm, with its river frontage, is one of the villages most imposing buildings, having been converted in recent times to a nursing home. The Vera Fletcher Hall, the theatre for Thames Ditton, is located on Embercourt Road, near to Thames Ditton Railway Station.
Thames Ditton Railway Station provides easy access for commuters, serving stations between London Waterloo and Hampton Court Railway Stations. Various bus services operate throughout Thames Ditton, including the 515, 514, 513, 458 and 459, all of which are operated by Surrey County Council. The motorist is conveniently connected by easy access to the A3 offering routes in to and out of London and Surrey.
Thames Ditton has, unlike many other suburbs of outer London, resisted over development, retaining its historic, picturesque semi-rural village feel. Nestled on the Thames, between Kingston upon Thames, Hampton Court and Esher; The village provides a plethora of property styles from small blocks of modern apartments to large, detached family houses with spacious gardens, to waterfront developments. The area is predominantly popular with families thanks to its fantastic array of excellent schools, green and leafy streets and its tranquil river frontage. This secluded village boasts mainly period houses ranging from flat-fronted cottages to larger detached houses although there are also homes from every era since. The area around its vibrant village High Street, has been converted into a conservation area, ensuring it maintains its charming character whilst still boasting a vibrant mix of boutique shopping, restaurants, cafes and gastro style pubs where residents can unwind along its unspoilt riverside.
