It’s Moving Day – Are You Prepared?

  27 Jan 2017

Moving day is an exciting day, but it is also likely to be a busy and challenging day. There is a lot of advice and guidance on packing up and moving out of your old home, but there is less information on how to make the most of your first day in your new home. This guide will help you be prepared on moving day.

Set up your kitchen and bathroom

These two rooms are going to be in use from very early on in your new home, so make sure that they are good to go from the start. With respect to the bathroom, toilet paper, soap (or specific cleaning product for hands) and towels are the most important aspects for a bathroom so have these handy when you pack and put them in place early on when you move.

For your kitchen, you want to ensure that you have essential covered. In the moving process, tea and coffee are often great features to have, so make sure you have a kettle, cups and tea/coffee, milk and sugar on hand. You should also look to have a bin, paper towels and maybe even plates and cutlery to hand. If it makes things easier, have disposable plates and cutlery on hand, but make sure that people can eat and drink while in your home.

Clean the refrigerator and freezer and stock it up

Sometimes fridges develop a stale smell when they are empty, so give it a scrub and if you have baking soda or vinegar on hand, freshen up the smell with those products. You should also look to place any refrigerated or frozen goods you brought with you into the fridge and freezer.

Change the locks

A tip that is becoming increasingly popular for people moving into new homes is to change all of their locks. This will provide peace of mind with respect to the security of the property while ensuring that previous owners cannot gain access to the home. Even if you think moving day is too soon or too busy to carry out this act, you should at least contact a locksmith and put the change into action.

Make sure you know your address and that you use it

Depending on how long you stayed in your previous property, you may find that you instinctively reel off your former address. As soon as you are moved into your new home, focus on remembering the new address and making it second nature to use or recite it. If you have still to inform relevant authorities of your change of address, do so quickly.

Learn the bin days

One of the most important tasks for people in a new home is to make sure they know what bins are put out on which day. Some areas have a range of bins at people’s property and there are often specific collections. Make sure you know which bin you need to put out on the right day. If you haven’t received this information from the selling party or agent, it can be an excuse to introduce yourself to a neighbour.

If you have time after settling in and starting the unpacking process, reviewing the home inspection report or survey can help you plan what to do next in your home.

If people have helped you move home, make sure you thank them in the proper manner and then you can look forward to enjoying your new home.

What our clients say about us

  • " I've dealt with some horrible agencies whilst renting in the past but I am glad we had Jezzards as our last. Didn't know that someone so professional and understanding and true to it's word existed in the business. I locked myself out once and they were there in  20 mins to assist. Heating stopped in the night and their out of hours assistance helped sort us out. Any problems or issues, were very promptly and effectively dealt with...I didn't even have to chase them. Our exit was quick, refunds took some time due to overlooked issues, which Victoria Jezzard looked into personally, and all done in 3 days. Dorathy was our handler and she was ace!! "
