Keeping your garden presentable during the winter months

Winter is usually a quiet time of year for gardeners with the harsher weather conditions making it difficult for many plants, flowers and fruit or vegetables to grow. However, there are ways in which a gardener can keep active in the garden during the winter months. This is vitally important if the homeowner is looking to sell their property.

In spring, summer or autumn, the beautiful colours or striking nature of a garden can help to create a positive first impression for any potential buyer. Before a viewer has even made their way into a home, they can develop a positive association with the property due to the colours, smells and appearance of the garden. It can be a lot harder during the winter months and this is one of the reasons why many experts say that selling your home during winter is ill-advised.

However, there are ways in why you can keep your garden presentable during winter months and following these steps can help you to have a great looking garden all year round.

There are some plants that flourish in winter

This is the time of year when many plants lie dormant but there are some plants that prosper and flourish during the colder months of the year. Planting these and ensuring that they are in good condition before any visit will impress visitors for a number of reasons. The basic aesthetic appeal of flowers and plants will always be of benefit but the fact that you have cultivated a garden where there are still stunning plants in the winter time will be considered

Some of the plants you should look to have in your garden during the winter months are:

  • Lenten roses
  • Conifers
  • Coloured-Twig Dogwoods

Birds provide an attractive element to a winter garden

Just because the plants and flowers are lying low for the winter months doesn’t mean that life stops in your garden. Birds are still likely to come to your garden and during the colder months of the year, they may need assistance in obtaining sustenance. This is where you can add some life and colour to your garden, while also doing a good deed. This can help to create a positive image for your garden on the aesthetic appeal but it also shows you in a good light, which may be something that sways the final decision made by a potential buyer.

Adding a bird bath, a place to eat and maybe even a bird house can all add a sense of charm to your garden in the winter months but the real benefit comes in helping birds to be comfortable during the colder periods of the year.

Containers can add some colour

If you are looking to add a splash of colour during the winter months of the year, you can do so easily by adding some bright and colourful containers. These should be tidy and in your garden for a purpose but if you feel as though your winter garden is a bit drab and uninspiring, accessorise with some colour!

Keep it tidy

It should go without saying, and this is a tip for all year round as opposed to just being a winter tip, there is a need to ensure that your garden is tidy. This means removing toys and debris and if there are weeds or overgrowing elements, get rid of them before any viewings for your home. It is a small task but it is one that can offer a great range of benefits.

As anyone who lives in London and Surrey knows, it is often difficult to find cost-effective  tradesmen who carry out work to a high standard and turn up when they say they will. That’s exactly why we decided to hand pick our own team of in-house tradesmen, and we’re proud to be able to offer this service to local residents (even if you are not an existing client). If you need further advice or would like the assistance of a gardening service, please contact our property services team on 03330 433 633.

What our clients say about us

  • " I've dealt with some horrible agencies whilst renting in the past but I am glad we had Jezzards as our last. Didn't know that someone so professional and understanding and true to it's word existed in the business. I locked myself out once and they were there in  20 mins to assist. Heating stopped in the night and their out of hours assistance helped sort us out. Any problems or issues, were very promptly and effectively dealt with...I didn't even have to chase them. Our exit was quick, refunds took some time due to overlooked issues, which Victoria Jezzard looked into personally, and all done in 3 days. Dorathy was our handler and she was ace!! "
