Moving With Children – How To Make Life Easier

  18 Apr 2017

Moving home is a stressful situation and if you have children, it becomes even more difficult. However, it is possible to make the process easier and if you follow these steps you should find that moving with children is a lot easier.

Speak to your child and make sure that they involved with the process

Obviously the age of your child and how comfortable you are talking about the moving process with them will impact on how you approach this step but there is a great deal to be said for getting your child involved with the process. Many experts suggest that moving can be an unsettling time for children and a lot of this is down to the fact that they have very little control over the process.

If you can introduce areas where the child is responsible for decisions or plays their part in the process, you should find that this helps to minimise the stress and pressure on them during this situation. Whether you ask your child to pack their belongings, decide what they are going to take with them or even allow them to decorate their new room as they see fit, allowing your child to be involved with the process will help make things easier for them and you.

Seek help from professionals

Even if you don’t have kids, it makes sense to get as much help as you can professionals when moving home. Obviously the amount of belongings you have, where you are moving to and your budget will impact on the level of assistance you can afford to hire but if you have friends or family members who would be happy to help you out, it is worthwhile asking for support.

Whether the support allows you to get more down while still having time to spend with your child or you have a family member or friend keeping your child entertained, you will find that you can get a lot more done.

Never forget to have some fun

This may sound like the last thing you need to factor in when you are busy and stressed but if you want to minimise the boredom or inconvenience for your child, you need to make sure that there is something fun or at least some form of activity to enjoy during the moving process. This will also give you a break, perhaps allowing you to come back to an activity or process refreshed and in a more productive manner.

Arrange your children’s room first

When you get into your new home, it will feel as though there are a million and one things to do. Once you have all of the essential items unpacked, sorting out your child’s room makes sense. This will help them to feel at home and if they are tired or feeling as though they are in an unfamiliar place, setting up their room will hopefully put them at ease.

After this, you need to get yourself settled as best as you can but making some time to show your child the local area, perhaps pointing out parks and play-areas will be of benefit. If you know of any other families or youngsters in the area, arranging a playdate can be a good way to help your child develop new friends which will hopefully help them to feel at ease in the new home.

  • " I've dealt with some horrible agencies whilst renting in the past but I am glad we had Jezzards as our last. Didn't know that someone so professional and understanding and true to it's word existed in the business. I locked myself out once and they were there in  20 mins to assist. Heating stopped in the night and their out of hours assistance helped sort us out. Any problems or issues, were very promptly and effectively dealt with...I didn't even have to chase them. Our exit was quick, refunds took some time due to overlooked issues, which Victoria Jezzard looked into personally, and all done in 3 days. Dorathy was our handler and she was ace!! "
