Why Keeping Your Garden Nice And Tidy Will Help You Sell Your Home

  08 Sep 2017

If you are looking to sell your home, there are many things to consider, but you need to remember your garden and outside area of your property. Whether you have a large garden or just a small area of land, the condition and appearance of this area will have a big impact on any potential buyer. This is because this area is the first thing that a person will see when arriving at your property and this is the area that creates the “first impression”.

It is important to create a positive first impression and keeping your garden nice and tidy will help to sell your home. In a 2015 survey carried out by an online-based national estate agency, respondents were asked what the most important factors a buyer looks for when viewing a home were. 48% of respondents replied that a neat and well-kept garden was a crucial factor in judging a home. While it is probably correct to say that a great looking garden has never convinced a potential buyer to make an offer on a property, it is definitely correct to say that a bad garden will put people off of a property before they even set foot inside the property.

A garden should be clean, decluttered and tidy

When you are preparing the interior of a home for a sale, you should declutter rooms, clean to a high standard and make sure every room is tidy. This is the exact same outcomes you should be looking to achieve with the garden area. A decluttered area will appear to be more spacious and when you are selling property, you want to make your property look as spacious as possible.

Even if you are not “green-fingered”, making sure the lawn is mown, bushes are trimmed and toys or equipment are properly stored away will have a positive impact when it comes to creating a stylish garden.

You will also find that having some form of order in your garden, with defined borders, will help in making the good seem bigger. This means keeping flowers and vegetables separate or using colour to create eye-catching areas of your garden.

Also, if you have paved areas, it is always worthwhile using a power hose to ensure this area of your garden is spotless.

A garden should be safe and secure

You should be looking to create a sense of safety and security at your property, and this begins with your garden. Review your gate, fences and any exterior border and make sure that everything is in place and nothing is broken. If you need to carry out repair work, do so.

If you have the time and/or money, there are landscaping activities you can undertake to improve safety, security and privacy at your property. A couple of well-placed bushes or trees will block what people can see, and they may even help you to retain energy and heat in your property. At the very least, you should look to make changes to your garden layout that improves security and privacy but through landscaping, you can even lower the energy bills which would be great news for the owner of the property.

A garden should be stylish or have a purpose

While a garden should be clean and tidy, you should look to take the next step by creating areas of purpose in your garden. If you have space for a flower bed or you want to grow vegetables, do so, and make sure that you have an area specifically marked out.

A spacious garden is important but if there is nothing but lawn and paving in the garden, it can sometimes be overwhelming for a potential buyer. By showcasing what can be achieved in your garden, you provide ideas for what a property owner can do, and this means they will be more likely to picture themselves doing something with the garden.

A garden with colour and life sets the right tone for a potential buyer

You want to make sure that you offer a warm welcome to guests and a dash of colour and vitality will go a long way to creating a positive impression. If you aren’t good with plants and flowers, buy in seasonal plants that will make the entrance to your property a colourful one.

Taking these tips on board will make your garden attractive, spacious and functional, which are key elements that every potential buyer is looking for. No matter the size or shape of your garden, you should find that there are ways in which you can reach out to potential buyers through the correct use of your garden.

What our clients say about us

  • " I've dealt with some horrible agencies whilst renting in the past but I am glad we had Jezzards as our last. Didn't know that someone so professional and understanding and true to it's word existed in the business. I locked myself out once and they were there in  20 mins to assist. Heating stopped in the night and their out of hours assistance helped sort us out. Any problems or issues, were very promptly and effectively dealt with...I didn't even have to chase them. Our exit was quick, refunds took some time due to overlooked issues, which Victoria Jezzard looked into personally, and all done in 3 days. Dorathy was our handler and she was ace!! "
